THE NASAL EXAMINATION
Since nasal appearance and function cannot be separated if a good surgical result is to be obtained, it is important for a patient to understand how the nose should look on the outside and how it works on the inside. This is accomplished through a medical examination by a qualified expert specializing in this type of surgery. The doctor will evaluate the nose and face, making sure that the proportion is appropriate for the individual and his ethnic background. The doctor will evaluate the bone and cartilage, determining which structures need to be changed or shaped to provide harmony. Skin quality cannot be changed surgically and ultimately determines what can be accomplished with aesthetic surgery. Ideally, the nasal skin should not be too thin or too oily. This will then better drape over the supporting bone and cartilage.
FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY
The nose can be divided into two internal triangular spaces called nasal cavities. As long as there is sufficient space for air to pass through both sides of the nose and nothing blocks the space, air flows freely.
